Chapter 23

Raven

When the king emerged from my room, he strode past us, his son at his side. “Follow.”

Nuvian joined us, shutting the door.

We’d started after the king when Rhaelyn cried out behind us. “I want to go home. I’m bailing on this piece of shit deal.”

I held tight to Elion’s hand, worried someone would wrench me from his grasp.

“I don’t want to stay either,” Nashio said. “Get me out of this hellhole.”

“Only Betts left.” I pushed out a sigh. “And me.” And I had no idea what I wanted to do. I should leave, right? Someone had marked me for death and let’s face it, as a magic-less person, there wasn’t anything I could do to stop them.

My knees shook, and I kept swallowing back bile. All I could see was Madison lying on the floor with her throat cut. The blood . . .

Elion studied my face, but I didn’t dare ask him what he hoped to see.

If all the other women left, how could I stay here alone? To think I’d been eager to leave before I even got here. Now leaving felt like I would rip away one of my limbs.

Love shouldn’t slam into a person like this.

The king turned. His growl ripped through the room, and his glare took in the gaping audience of guards, staff, and the women. “I would like to speak with all of you in the green library.” He pivoted and strode down the hall with his son and his full detail of guards hurrying behind him.

We crowded inside the big room aptly named the green library since plants had taken over most of the open spaces, and long rows of books covered two walls.

The king sat in an oversized wooden chair with spikes jutting up from the back. It was mounted in front of a huge desk and on a gilded platform.

Elion guided me farther into the room and urged me to sit on a green floral sofa.

Rhaelyn and Nashio leaned against the wall inside the entrance, and Betts followed Nuvian over to join me and Elion, though he gave her a pointed look and took a chair. She stared at him long enough that it made me uncomfortable before sitting on a matching sofa that also faced the king’s desk.

“What is this nonsense about leaving?” He may project calm, but his icy stare shouted out his fury. He leaned back in the chair and clasped his hands on his chest.

Aillun took a position behind him with the ever-alert guards lining the back and side walls.

“Women are dying,” Rhaelyn growled.

Nashio nodded and eased closer to Rhaelyn.

“Two accidents,” King Khaidill said. “Two tragedies that must not compromise the treaty.”

“This is about more than the treaty,” Rhaelyn said.

“I, too, am horrified that they’ve died. Here. In the castle!”

“What happens if another one of us dies by . . . accident?” she asked. “Will you then agree something terrifying is happening here and let us go home?”

“They were accidents.”

She huffed. “Show me the coroner’s report.
